The GPG has done its own breakdown of the survey results as follows:

What residents thought about the trial.

Apparently "57% of residents in Chiswick Riverside were positive about the prospect of wheelie bins". We are not told how many, but there were, later, 1,319 people involved in the trial itself.

Following the trial, 434 of the 1319 Riverside residents responded to the consultation questionnaire. This is 33%, but only 59% of the responses from those 33% (ie 19.47% of the total trialled) have been processed, apart from the first question (see below).

First question:

85% of the 434 in Chiswick Riverside who responded (ie 369 out of 1319 people) apparently said they were in favour of using a wheeled bin for the collection of their rubbish.

However, in Chiswick Riverside:

Has using a wheeled bin for your household rubbish helped you to recycle more?

No 77%

Yes 23%

Indicate below how using a wheeled bin for your household rubbish has affected how you use the recycling services provided:

Chiswick Riverside

Recycling box collection

No change 81%

Use this less  0%

Use this more 10%

Paper collection

No change 81%

Use this less  0%

Use this more 11%

Plastics collection

No change 80%

Use this less  0%

Use this more 12%

Use this more  5%

So, even though only 59% of the replies have been annotated and even though it wasn’t measured independently, the indications are that wheelie bins have made a minimal difference to Riverside reycling.

Other responses:

ACROSS THE BOROUGH:

Other extracts from the report:

"There is only one week’s worth of pre trial data of from household rubbish collections and two week’s worth of recycling data at the end of the trial. As the amount of rubbish and recycling collected each week can vary significantly this may not be representative over a whole year".

Increasing recycling and composting rates

"Assessing the impact of an increase in recycling and composting is more difficult to measure. This is because recycling collection crews collect in different areas to the wheeled bin trial areas"

However data was collected during a two week period prior to the start of the trial in June 2013, where collection crews only collected recycling in the trial areas. This method was repeated in December for a two week period.

The results from June in the trial area were as follows:

Composting rate (garden waste and  food waste ): 20.36%

Dry Recycling rate (green box, paper bag and plastics) 16.73%

The results from December in the trial area are as follows:

Composting rate (garden waste and  food waste )                      17.93%

Recycling rate (green box, paper bag and plastics)      22.74%

Increasing participation in recycling

"It is useful to analyse not only whether there is more recycling going on, but that more people are recycling. Information was gathered in April to assess the ‘Participation Rate’ of areas across the borough. Results showed that 72.4% of people use the recycling box, 42.8% using the food waste, 70.7% using the plastics sack and 30.3% using the garden waste sack”.
