Half-term holidays can be a time for teachers to re-charge batteries, but in last week’s holiday senior staff at The William Hogarth School in Chiswick were working hard on redecorating.

Avril Stockley, headteacher, said: “We are continuing to improve the school but because we are focusing our budget on the classrooms we have decided to try and do anything else ourselves.

"Several days’ hard work and some cut-price paint has converted our main entrance from drab and dowdy to sparkling and professional."

At the moment, they have a major re-roofing project, funded by the local authority and due to complete in December.

Last month William Hogarth School completed a restructure of the staff, which they say was made necessary by tough financial conditions. Some redundancies were made but they say they now have a "fighting chance" at balancing their budget.

They are also hoping to relocate their nursery class so that the youngest children will no longer be right beside the pollution on the A4. They will also build a nature garden in the playground. That project, however, is likely to use up all of their discretionary spending, but they hope to finish it by early next year.

They are also hopeful that a local donor will pay for the renovation of their playground summer house.

Despite financial difficulties there is a mood of great optimism, they say.
