Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams may have been otherwise engaged but the annual Finals Day at Chiswick Poly Tennis still served up a feast of tennis at the University of Westminster Sports Ground on Hartington Road.

It was the culmination of the club’s annual summer tournament organised by Annette Mathers.

There was fun, food, drink, boules – as well as a spot of tennis on the courts.

Teenager Charlie Sichel won the men’s singles 6-3 6-4 in a hard fought clash with Thomas Whitaker.

The ladies’ singles title was claimed by Anna Martinsson who defeated Bridget Clements 6-2 6-3.

Sue Perse and Sally Verkaik prevailed in the ladies’ doubles final 7-6 6-1 against Jill Dixon and Sophia Bardsley.

And Jill Dixon and Ian Wylie took the Mixed Doubles crown 6-4 6-3 v Bridget Clements and David Sichel.

The men’s doubles final will be played at a later date.

Reports that Spaniard Rafa and Swiss ace Roger Federer requested a postponement have yet to be confirmed.

New members of all standards are always welcome at Chiswick Poly Tennis, a local community sports club.
