Clarks Shoes on Chiswick High Road shut up shop this Friday (7 June) in yet another blow to trade in the area.

The closure took local residents by surprise. The shoe shop has been a presence on the High Road for many years.

A poster went up today saying "It's Not Goodbye," and informing locals where the nearest branches were (Hammersmith, Richmond, Ealing and Westfield).

Staff spent the day removing stock from the shop. It is understood they have been reallocated jobs at other branches.

It appears that the lease had ended and the company decided not to renew it.

Clarks Head office confirmed the closure.

Clarks has always been popular with parents for children's shoes, particularly school shoes.

It was founded in 1825 by brothers Cyrus and James Clark in Street, Somerset, England – where it still has its headquarters.
