A Devonshire Road based pizza maker has been named as the world’s best pizza chef in this year’s World 50 Top Pizza Awards.

Michele Pascarella, owner of pizzeria Napoli On the Road, already had the European title but this week received the Global Pizza Maker award.

Michele grew up near Naples and has been making pizza since he was 11 helping out in his parents’ restaurant in Caserta.

He came to London when he was 19 and worked in a number of pizzerias. Along with his business partner Paolo Cimmino, he set up Napoli On the Road as a pizza truck with its own wood-burning oven inside attending farmers’ markets across London.

In 2019 he opened in Chiswick at 9 Devonshire Road in the former premises of Canta Napol where a wood fired over was installed. The restaurant also serves pasta dishes and provides gluten-free options.

The award is given only after a rigorous judging process in which restaurants are assessed during unannounced visits.

Michele was described by judges as ‘pioneer of contemporary pizza,’ for his use of innovative toppings including Genovese ragu, crispy parmigiano reggiano chips, courgette cream, and beef fillet tartare. However, you can still order a margherita pizza at Devonshire Road if you want.
