A cafe that was often referred to as one of Chiswick's "hidden gems" is to close this weekend.

The Classic Image Cafe Gallery on Devonshire Road, part of the fraternity of independent traders that give W4 its unique identity, will shut its doors on Saturday.

Owner Kyra von Schottenstein told chiswickw4.com ; "Sadly we will be closing the Cafe after 12 years of trading on the Devonshire Road.

"We would like to thank all our friends and customers that supported us over the years and helped to create the special atmosphere that made the Cafe so unique. We will miss them as much as they will miss us!

"We hope that another independent shop follows in our footsteps, as that is what makes neighbourhoods attractive and welcoming."

Classic Image Cafe Gallery had for many years defied the arrival of coffee 'chains' and had built up a loyal following of customers who came for the calm atmosphere and home-made cakes. The cafe also sold black and white framed photographs and a wide selection of greeting cards of all types as well as wrapping paper and home-made chocolates.

It is not known what will replace the cafe.

The founder of the Support for Independent Retail campaign, Clare Rayner has called on local authorities to start prioritising smmall businesses. She said:Smaller shops are so important to the UK and they’re the ones who are keeping local economies afloat. Local authorities need to divert this oncoming storm and start prioritising their small businesses and independent retailers. If they don’t, the high street could face a real crisis.”
