Called The Hopper, it costs £17.95 and comes with a traditional tomato and mozzarella base, capers, fresh dill and thyme. A scoop of anchovy sorbet, which melts into the pizza as you nibble around each leg, completes the pizza.

The pizza is the brainchild of Sami Wasif, owner of the ECO firm of pizza restaurants, which has branches in Chiswick and Clapham.

He said, “I’ve been making pizza for more than 20 years in London and know this is a city that is always looking for something new.

“Most people see pizza as a quick meal - this is something a little more refined. You need a finger bowl and must take time over the legs, not shovel the whole pizza into your mouth as you might with a piccante.

“A recent trip to Paris gave me the idea and we have a lot of regular French customers so I thought I’d do something for them. Pizza is one of those things that you can experiment with....

“Who knows, I might try one with snails on it next.”
