Shafran, the popular local café on Sutton Court Road, has closed but not because of a lack of support from its many customers.

The business was set up less than a year ago by husband and wife team Sabina and Mikayil Hasanli who are both from Baku in Azerbaijan. They met in the UK and wanted to bring some of the flavours of their home country to Chiswick offering breakfasts, home-made cakes, breads, speciality coffee and gourmet sandwiches to take away or eat in. The name of the café means saffron and this flower was central to the cuisine.

However, now Sabina has received a really great job offer in the Middle East and the couple decided to accept a proposal to take over their lease that had been made by a group of professional chefs one of whom is a regular on TV. The decision was helped along by the age of their child who was small enough to make the time right for such a big move.

The new business is reportedly going to be offering something between a café and a brasserie. They have said that they would have a good range of vegan and gluten free foods and that they would be applying for an alcohol licence.

Shafran, was based at 14a Sutton Court Road, in the premises formerly run by Badger & Earl.
