The first UK branch of Australian wholefoods chain 'The Source' which aims for 'zero waste' by selling unpackaged organic foodstuffs and household products, is to open in the former Oliver Bonas shop on Turnham Green Terrace.

Makayla Drummond-Murray and husband Patrick Cermak hope to open their shop later this month after the refit of the shop is completed.

'The Source Bulk Foods ' will sell a range of about 450 products, ranging from organic flours and cereals, honey, nuts and other dried products, which will be displayed in clear bins ready for customers to scoop up as much or as little as they need. People can bring their own containers or use the paper bags provided in the store. The range will cater for special diets including paleo, gluten free, and vegan.

Makayla, who is Australian, but who has lived in London for fourteen years, was inspired to open the shop by the example the company founders Paul and Emma, who left their corporate jobs in Sydney in 2007 to set up a health food store. When realised that most of the health foods stocked were heavily packaged they decided to buy bulk foods to be sold in large bins and the concept of 'zero waste' at The Source- there are now forty outlets in Australia and the stores are operated on a franchise. The Chiswick store will be the first in the UK.

Makayla has also left her job in the corporate world. She said she aims to make Turnham Green Terrace the first 'zero waste' street in London and hopes to pursuade other food stores on the Terrace to join with her in encouraging customers to bring in their own bags, containers and bottles for refilling.

Their range includes nuts, seeds, grains, herbs, spices, cereals, flour, rice, paleo products, superfoods, honey, oils, vinegars, confectionary, snacks, cleaning products, and personal care products such as shampoo and bath products. Makayla hopes it will be complementary to the grocery and fresh food shops nearby.

The ethos of The Source is also to sell as many locally produced products as possible.
