On the day that Arsenal claimed the Premiership title in North London, Chiswick held its very own day of compelling football as 39 teams from 18 local primary schools and clubs competed in the first ever Grove Park 5-a side football tournament.

The event was organised by the Grove Park Primary School PTA as a fund-raiser. Nearly 300 budding soccer stars took part, cheered on by a large crowd of committed parents. The sun shone as the action unfolded on four pitches at Chiswick Community School.

The Under-9 and Under-11 Challenge Cups kicked off at 9.30 sharp. After negotiating their way through a tough group stage, followed by two knock-out rounds, Acton & Ealing Whistlers faced Scott’s Strikers from St. Mary’s School in the Under-11 Final, and Addison Terminators met Chelsea Blues in the Under-9 Final. Acton & Ealing Whistlers were crowned Under-11 champions after an impressive 4-0 win, whilst Addison Terminators won a closely fought match 1-0 to claim the Under-9 cup.

In the afternoon session the aptly-named Mrs Maria’s Marvels from St. Mary’s School were unbeaten in the Under-8 competition, winning the Final against Falcons’ Flyers 5-0.

The Under-10 competition was packed with excitement, with extra time and penalties required to separate the teams at both quarter and semi-final stage. Belmont School showed impressive resilience, winning two successive shoot-outs before losing in the semi-finals to John Betts. In a nail-biting final, Chiswick Wanderers edged past John Betts with a well-placed shot from the edge of the area by 9-year old Brendan Matthew.
