The Vatican cricket team, St Peter's, had an enjoyable afternoon playing against the Houses of Parliament XI on the pitch in Chiswick House grounds last week.

The fixture, which was one of seven in the Vatican teams’ 2018 tour of England, took place on Thursday (12 July) and drew an interested crowd of local cricket lovers as well as local residents.

The team included seminarians and priests and their supporters were easily distinguishable in their bright yellow Vatican jackets.

Fr Eamonn O’Higgins LC, Manager of the Saint Peter’s Cricket Team, told chiswickw4 that they were delighted to be in Chiswick and playing on such a lovely pitch. It was their first time to visit the area.

"We are extremely pleased to be here, on our 4th Light of Faith Tour of England"

They had also played a Commonwealth Xi at the Indian Gymkhana Ground in Osterley earlier in the week. and were also scheduled to play Her Majesty’s Prison and Young Offenders Institution XI; Mount Cricket Club, East London Faith Team; Stoneyhurst College; and Royal Household Cricket Club.

The tour also includes joining up with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s team to face the Inter-faith XI as part of the tour.

St Peter’s Cricket Club was officially founded in 2014 and consists of priests, deacons and seminarians studying and working in Rome and the Vatican. The team is under the official patronage of the Pontifical Council for Culture and members come from across the Commonwealth.

The team’s objectives are to increase the awareness of the importance of religion for society and promote inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue through cricket. Cricket matches thus serve as platforms to bring different communities together and to promote what Pope Francis has called the ‘culture of encounter and dialogue’.
