With work very much in progress to rebuild a ravaged squad Old Meadonians’ new management team Jack Costello and Ed Glover was split on Saturday with Glover on a scouting trip and Costello in charge at Riverside Lands to welcome Old Carthusians in the preseason champions’ Greenland cup.

Although Carthusians travelled in hope, having achieved a double last season, winning the Public Schools’ Arthurian League and the Arthur Dunn Cup, and Meads had just four of last years’ squad on show, the hosts always had just too much nous Costello’s answer was to inject two elements from second team, the searing pace of youngster Denver Morriss and the all-round tenacity of Damien Reading.

Coupled with speedy and experienced spearhead Leon Smith and bolstered by evergreen sweeper Dan Salanson and ex Norwich City youth teamer Luke Graham at the back, this line up was enough to keep the visitors at bay. The fact that Smith scored both goals augurs well for the future.

Team: Toyne, Salanson, Hanley, Graham, Reading, Reynolds, Morriss, Lloyd, Jacobs, Richards, (J.Lovell), L.Smith.
