Old Meadonians’ midfielder Pete Lovell found his shooting boots to pilot Meads through to the next round of the Middlesex and Essex cup at Alexandra Park on Saturday with a brace of first half goals, narrowly missing out on his hat trick when he hit the bar with half an hour to go in the second half.

An honest and sporting Park side from the Southern Amateur League were always under pressure and the visitors’ first came on the quarter hour. Luke Graham got to the bye-line on the right and, as Leon Smith’s near-post run pulled the defence with him, Graham’s deep cross was met by Lovell’s flying header.

Five minutes Smith outpaced a square defence to latch onto Will Gerrish’s ball over the top to round the keeper. With five minutes of the half remaining Smith was the provider, running onto a pass from Jed Lloyd and squaring for Lovell to finish crisply from fifteen yards. The second half saw more one way traffic during which Smith hit the post for the predatory Ed Glover to snap up the rebound. Pete Lovell was named MoM.

Team: Toyne, Graham, Pilcher, Palmer, Lloyd, Glover, Gerrish, Thompson, (Jacobs), Lovell, Eguae, Smith.
