Old Meadonians began their 85th season with a friendly against Amateur Football Combination Premiership colleagues, Honourable Artillery Company at Riverside Lands on Saturday.

They found their guests, who last year ended the season snapping at Meads' heels in fourth place, were the better prepared, this being their third match and had hit the ground up and running to give Meads an early wake up call.

With co-coach Rory Vermeulen away on urgent scouting duties, Paul Rumley was in sole command and although he was happy with the squad's general fitness he conceded that H.A.C. were match fitter, giving him some work to do, even with the comforting knowledge that six senior players were still unavailable.

The visitors were two up at half time via an neatly taken individual effort on the half hour and ten minutes later a twenty yard well struck free-kick. However, Meads did tighten up to be on level terms from an Ed Glover penalty and Aidan Chapman's timely run onto Glover's cross only for H.A.C. to deservedly come back with a breakaway goal with ten minutes to go.

Squad:-Robinson, Costello, O'Sullivan, Goode, Mantel, Chapman, Bright, Gerrish, Wilson, C. Jones, Glover, McCombe, Quinn.
