Result :- Chiswick 25 Tottonians 1

After two league losses, this win really began the season for a Chiswick team still searching for the best combination of players from a large pool, with a number of newcomers making their marks.

Newly promoted Tottonians, from Southampton, dominated the first ten minutes, their flyhalf dropping a goal when the home defence looked solid under a probing attack. Gabs Lowe equalised with a penalty kick after a scintillating attack involving the two Dans, Sutherland and Godfrey. Sutherland, on the left wing, then set up the first try of the match, with James Banbury finally putting Luca Vannini in under the posts. Lowe converted.

Tottonians came back with a penalty goal, but it was Sutherland again who broke the visitors’ line before the ball was passed sweetly along the line for right wing Tom Steer to score in the corner. Just before half-time, Tottonians produced a similar, unconverted, try in the right corner.

Steer got another try two minutes into the second half, fly-hacking a loose ball down-field and winning the chase. Lowe slotted this one. Chiswick nearly got a fourth ( bonus point ) try after some brilliancy by full-back Joe Grindle, allied with a mazy run by Sutherland, but they had to make do with a penalty goal, this time kicked by sub Dave Hill.

The final minutes belonged to Tottonians, with their replacement No.8 to the fore, and two penalty goals gave them a deserved bonus point.
