Chiswick-based rowing club Thames Tradesmen’s are celebrating a double triumph at this year’s Pair Head of the River race.

The event took place on Sunday 11 October despite Covid-19 restrictions and Hammersmith Bridge being closed.

The race, which normally starts at Chiswick Bridge and runs past Hammersmith down to Putney, started this year from Kew Railway Bridge and ended at Hammersmith Bridge.

Thames Tradesmen’s Rowing Club just had three entries with Tom Jack and Dave Bulmer winning the Open Masters B Paid Category and Philip Hindley and the Club’s Captain, Paul Arnold, winning the Open Masters E/G Pairs Category. Tom Clements and Luke Dillon, Chairman of Thames Regional Rowing Council, gave an excellent performance in the fiercely competitive Open Pairs Club Category.

Chairman of Thames Tradesmen’s Rowing Club, Nigel Brophy said he was so proud of the members who competed in the event and those who supported them on the banks outside their club house by Barnes Railway Bridge, “This is just the beginning of getting Thames Tradesmen’s back to being a popular club for rowers of all abilities within the community.”

Thames Tradesmen’s runs Learn To Row and Back To Row courses, which are proving more popular than ever before. Nigel says “With so many people working from home there is a greater need to ensure that one is fit – both mentally and physically. Rowing on the river gives you both and the great thing is it’s outdoors.”

He continues, “A lot of the people who have taken up the sport see it as a release button, an opportunity to communicate with others and focus their minds on something not work related. It’s the perfect way to get away from it all.”
