Students from Chiswick Community School and Gunnersbury Catholic School have created a public art gallery on Chiswick High Road.

The artwork was officially unveiled this week at the site of BAM Construction’s development at Chiswick Green which is between Gunnersbury station and Chiswick Roundabout.

The sixth-form students were invited to help celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June by creating pieces of art about the environment.

The Chiswick Community School students took their inspiration from British award-winning artist Julian Opie. Gunnersbury Catholic School students’ work focussed on their immediate environment, ranging from the symmetry of nature to the urban cityscape. The project, which supported the students’ coursework at school, was so successful that a selection of final pictures where chosen to be displayed on the site’s hoardings.

The opening of the gallery on 10 June was organised with Garth Buckle, MBE, of Hounslow Education Business Partnership. Said Garth: ‘These are wonderful pieces of art that have brightened up an otherwise blank canvass. The project itself has provided a real context for student learning and enrichment. The support BAM gives to our community is widely appreciated as projects like these not only help to motivate and inspire young people, but also helps to prepare them for the world of work.’

Miss Herd, Chiswick’s Head of Art, said 'Our students enjoyed painting on such a large scale and are excited by the opportunity of having their art work exhibited publicly for such a long period of time. We are very proud of the art work they have produced.'

BAM is also providing apprentices with over 100 weeks of training at the site, where the artwork will be featured on its hoardings until BAM completes the six-storey office development in February 2012.
