Residents are being helped to make energy-saving improvements to their homes without having to pay all the costs up front.

For an introductory period only, the council has funding to give a limited number of residents the chance to get a free energy assessment to identify what improvements, such as upgrading old boilers and loft insulation, could be installed in their homes as part of the Green Deal.

The Green Deal, set-up by government, lets people carry out home improvements to reduce their energy use and pay for them using the predicted savings on their energy bills.

Cllr Colin Ellar, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for environment, said:

“Most people know they could save money on their energy bills by upgrading their old boiler, or installing insulation, but the up-front costs can be hard to justify in tough economic times.

“This scheme removes the upfront costs, and helps pay for the work through the savings made on your bill.

“With our offer of free assessments, it’s now so easy to find out how you could benefit.”

Energy-saving improvements include:

  • insulation - e.g. loft or cavity wall insulation
  • heating
  • draught-proofing
  • double glazing
  • renewable energy technologies - e.g. solar panels or wind turbines
