Hounslow’s bid to ban spitting is proving popular with over 3,000 residents signing a petition to stamp out the habit in the borough.

Cllr Ed Mayne, cabinet member for community safety and regulatory services, said: “The response from residents to the petition has been superb.

“It’s only been over a month since we launched the petition and having 3,000 people sign it already is fantastic.”

The petition, which is still available to sign online and in paper form, was launched on 23 September.

But Cllr Mayne added: “We need as many people as possible to sign up. That way we stand an even better chance of getting approval from the Government to introduce a by-law to stamp out the habit in Hounslow.”

The petition follows a council motion proposing a ban on spitting which received cross party support earlier this year. In order to introduce a ban, the council needs to demonstrate public support for a by-law.

The petition is available online at and in paper form in all borough libraries, and at the Civic Centre, Lampton Road, Hounslow.

The petition will run until 18 December.
