Children
and Young People's Groups
| The
work of the group focuses not only
on the provision for children and
young people at St Michael's
but also on the ways in which they
are enabled to be active members
of the Church community. To support
our work with children, the Group
holds a termly leader's meeting where
plans for the coming term are discussed
and agreed.
Under
7's Group
The
Under 7's Group meet in the
Centre during term time throughout
the year. We are keen to ensure
that children gain a sense of
belonging to a wider church
community and of taking part
in mainstream worship.

To
achieve this aim, children now begin in church,
leaving after the first hymn and rejoin during
Communion. Although this shortens the time
available in the Centre, it helps to strengthen
the link between the Church service and what
the children do in the Centre. We now use Pebbles,
the pre-school programme of children's church
which is part of Living Stones by Susan Sayers.
This programme mirrors the service followed
in church with activities based on the same
Gospel and readings. It involves children's
leaders in more activity planning and design
but the result is a curriculum that meets the
needs of our small but lively and able group.
| There
is a rota of two leaders each week
and we would very much welcome new
volunteers to join us. Professional
teaching qualifications or experience
are not necessary. Much more important
is an appreciation of the value that
young children add to the church
community and commitment to working
positively with them. We have 3 displays
at the back of the church so that
the children's work and notices can
be displayed.
Vestry
Group
A
group for over 7's meet in the
vestry during the 10.00 a.m.
service on Sundays. Children
from the choir and congregation
are encouraged to join the group
for bible study.
Occasional Craft afternoons
take place during the holidays,
and have proved very successful
with approximately 20 children
attending. As many of those
taking part do not regularly
attend St. Michael's this provides
an opportunity for outreach
work with children from the
local community.
