Chiswick Nursery Rated 'One Of The Best' In The Country
Cheers and laughter at Devonshire Day Nursery

Cheers and laughter spread like a ‘Mexican wave’ through Devonshire Day Nursery in Chiswick as it was named one of the best early learning centres in the country following a surprise Oftsted inspection.

As Dee Townsend, new manager of the day nursery in Bennett Street, explained the celebrations to mark the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating – achieved by only 12 per cent of English Early Years Providers – began immediately and continue.

“The gate closed behind the inspector and as each room got the news, the staff and children erupted with cheering and laughter. I think some of the children thought it was a game but it was a wonderful, fun-filled, moment for us all,” she said adding that the push for further improvement would continue in spite of the top ratings achieved in every category.

Indoor and outdoor play and learning spaces are described as well resourced and providing a very wide range of stimulating experiences, enabling children of all ages and abilities to make the best possible progress.

“The children form very secure relationships with the staff who know them very well as individuals and show a profound concern for their wellbeing, happiness and security,” said the inspector, noting that very close links with parents ensure a consistent approach.

Dee Townsend, appointed Manager just six months ago, welcomed praise for the use of the nursery garden as every available space has been utilised so children can plant and harvest vegetables for meals; exercise and explore and, more recently participate in the Forest Schools project which develops an appreciation of the environment.

“Parents and staff working together over many years have made this nursery outstanding. That Ofsted has recognised it is the icing on the cake,” she said.
