The Cathedrals Express, the well-known steam-hauled special train that runs from London and regional centres to many of Britain’s historic and Cathedral cities will be coming to Chiswick to mark some special events in 2012.

On Thursday 14 June, for the first time in over 60 years, residents of Chiswick will have the chance to travel from their local station, through the rolling hills of Dorset to the sandy beaches of the Victorian seaside town of Swanage, where you have around three hours to take a trip on the heritage railway line, take a stroll along the beach or simply have a coffee in one of the many tearooms, before returning to Chiswick by around 9.30pm.

There is an additional chance to travel from Chiswick on the 21 June, this time via the scenic West Somerset Railway through the Quantock Hills to the lovely seaside town of Minehead, or to the pretty city of Wells- the smallest in England! The train is rostered to be hauled by 4464 Bittern, the sister engine to the record-breaking steam locomotive, Mallard.

Passengers joining the train at Chiswick have four different travel options to choose from: two full dining options (Pullman Style and Premier Dining), First Class and Premium Standard.

Pullman Style Dining passengers are seated in restored 1950s wood-panelled carriages with comfortable seating, individual table lamps and curtains at the window; how train travel used to be. Welcome glasses of champagne accompany the delicious breakfast or brunch on the outward journey. On the return, passengers will be welcomed on board with canapés before being served a four-course meal with a half bottle of wine per person.

Premier Dining tables have passengers enjoy a champagne breakfast or brunch on the outward journey and a four course dinner on the return. They can order drinks from our large on-board menu, featuring a wide range of wines, beers, ales and of course, soft drinks.

First Class passengers are seated in compartments for up to six people. Champagne and orange juice is served shortly after boarding, along with teas and coffees throughout the day. Our waiting staff will serve home-baked cakes or biscuits on the outward journey and will be happy to take orders from our range of hot and cold food and drinks.

In the Premium Standard coach passengers are seated at tables for four, and there are dedicated waiting staff to bring passengers unlimited complimentary tea and coffee along with any items bought from our delicious range of hot and cold food and drinks.

Marcus Robertson, Chairman of The Cathedrals Express, commented, “It is always really exciting to bring a steam train to a new route. The interest and enthusiasm from passengers to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a steam train as it thunders through the countryside at speeds of up to 75mph is wonderful. And the idea of travelling in style, being looked after by our friendly and efficient staff while enjoying superb food and drink, just seems to strike a chord with the public’.

Prices for this wonderful, nostalgic day trip range from £99 - £225 per person.
