We all know the strong link between good oral health and overall good general health.

However a new study conducted in Madrid and co-authored by researchers at the University of Bristol shows Covid-19 patients are being admitted to intensive care three times more often if they have periodontitis (gum disease).

It is suspected that COVID-19 patients on ventilators could be particularly vulnerable as they are more likely to inhale oral bacteria, according to the study.

Analysts looked at the health records of 600 Covid-19 patients, of which 40 ended up in intensive care on a ventilator. Whether the patients suffered from serious gum disease was then analysed, as well as other factors - including diabetes, head disease, asthma and BMI.

With this in mind, at this time, everybody should maintain regular visits to a dental hygienist.

A dental hygienist's top priority is to prevent gum disease (painful, bleeding gums, bad breath and, if it's very bad, loose teeth) and promote good oral health by reinforcing good brushing techniques and oral health care.

A strong follower of preventative care, Dr Ralph Palmer Gilhooly Principal at The dentist@Chiswick is encouraging everybody to make sure they keep good oral health especially a this difficult time.
