News and information service Teletext is set to switch off in January 2010 two years ahead of when the official analogue shut down begins.

Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) blamed "current economic conditions" for bringing the end date forward putting all 70 jobs at the Chiswick Business Park office at risk.

Teletext services are broadcast on free-to-air commercial channels ITV, Channel 4 and Five.

Some digital services will also cease, but holiday services on Freeview and other commercial pages will remain.

Ofcom has also been blamed after the industry regulator indicated that Teletext could lose its public service licence which would mean that the broadcaster would have to pay for the signal that carries its text-based news service.
