The Addison Singers' summer concert has a travel theme
May 20, 2026 A summer evening of musical escapism is on offer in June as the Addison Singers classical choirs present Voyage, a themed concert exploring travel, adventure and the lure of far-off places. The programme, to be performed on Saturday 27 June at St. Peter’s Church on Southfield Road, brings together choral works that evoke everything from sun-drenched coastlines to bustling markets and the thrill of setting out across open water. The organisers describe it as a musical “brochure” of journeys — a chance to leave grey skies behind and step into warmer, more colourful worlds. The repertoire spans centuries and styles. Elgar’s As torrents in Summer opens the programme with pastoral warmth, while Lauridsen’s La Rose complète offers a moment of stillness and lyric beauty. Renaissance composer Thomas Weelkes contributes The Andalusian Merchant, a lively portrait of global trade and exploration, and Bob Chilcott’s The Voyage anchors the evening with its contemporary reflections on travel and discovery. Lighter touches come through Paul Carey’s Play with your food and a choral arrangement of Come Fly With Me, while Dvořák’s famous Largo from the New World Symphony — performed in a choral version — adds a sense of expansive, transatlantic adventure. Tickets are £18 in advance or £20 on the door, with reduced prices for under-16s. This event is generously sponsored by local estate agent Horton and Garton. New members are always welcome to join the Addison Group of Singers, which is made up of three different singing classes and four different choirs for singers of all ages, abilities and musical interests. The choir was founded more than 30 years ago with David Wordsworth as its Musical Director since 1995. Matthew Thomas Morgan was appointed Music Director, Classical at the beginning of 2023 to conduct the Chamber Choir and Oratorio Choir. The Addison Singers comprises two classical choirs – an auditioned Chamber Choir and larger non-auditioned Oratorio Choir; and two jazz choirs – an auditioned Jazz Ensemble and a larger non-auditioned all-female Jazz Choir. It also offers three different singing classes to meet the needs of beginners, intermediate and the more competent, experienced singer.
