Abundance London offer chance to learn traditional craft
January 24, 2026 A free drop-in willow weaving workshop will take place on Saturday 31 January from 12pm to 2pm at the Post Office Garden on Heathfield Terrace, offering residents the chance to learn a traditional craft while helping improve local green spaces. The session is being run by Abundance London, the volunteer-led environmental group known for its community planting projects, biodiversity work and creative public-realm initiatives across Chiswick. The organisation has spent more than a decade transforming unloved corners of the neighbourhood into pollinator-friendly gardens, orchards and pocket parks, often involving local schools and residents in hands-on activities. Willow weaving is one of the oldest rural crafts in Britain, traditionally used to make baskets, fencing, plant supports and decorative structures. Its flexibility and sustainability have made it increasingly popular in community gardening, where woven willow can be used to create natural barriers, wildlife habitats and sculptural features. At next Saturday’s workshop, participants will help build low “crisp-packet catcher” fences — small woven barriers designed to trap wind-blown litter before it reaches planting beds. Volunteers will also be shown how to make simple bird feeders and decorative pieces for Abundance London’s gardens. The event is informal and suitable for beginners. All materials will be provided, and the workshop is free to attend, though donations are welcome. Organisers are asking anyone planning to come to email info@abundancelondon.com with “WILLOW” in the subject line to help estimate numbers. The workshop will take place opposite the main Post Office on Heathfield Terrace.
