Meeting with the Founders of Two Inspiring Local Charities

Last week the Commons was in recess but the two council by-elections in Hammersmith Broadway ward and Lillie ward managed to keep me busy. The Commons is now back in session, and it has been a busy week in Westminster.

I began the week meeting with the founder of W4 Youth, a community youth project to give local young people somewhere safe to go when not in school. It was a great meeting and wonderful to hear of all the brilliant activities and initiatives W4 Youth provides to young people. You can find more information about the youth club here.

On Tuesday we had another public session with the Justice Committee. This week we heard evidence from Charlie Taylor, His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons, Dame Carol Black, Independent Advisor to the Government on Drugs and Elisabeth Davies, National Chair of Independent Monitoring Boards. The purpose of the session was to hear more about how we can tackle drugs in prisons.

On Wednesday there was a statement from the Deputy Prime Minister on Grenfell. There were many great contributions from Members in the chamber. I asked about a national oversight mechanism that would collate and then follow-up on all recommendations from inquiries and inquests and ensure they are implemented. I was pleased that the Deputy Prime Minister agreed to consider this going forward.

It was time for celebrations on Thursday morning for Nourish Hub’s third birthday. It was a fantastic event and wonderful that Nourish Hub is still going strong after three successful years. We were joined by the Deputy Mayor who cut the birthday cake!

On Friday morning, I was delighted to meet with the owners of The Raven in Stamford Brook – a popular local pub. In the afternoon, I visited Key4Life and met with mentors and the founder, Eva Hamilton. The visit was truly inspiring and incredibly helpful with the work the Justice Select Committee is doing on rehabilitation. Key4Life is a programme that takes ex-offenders into work with some of the UK's top companies and provides the confidence and support to turn their lives around.
