Labour's Conference and Being Sworn in as Solicitor General |
|
Report back from Andy Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith and Chiswick October 3, 2026 Labour Party Conference concluded on Tuesday with a brilliant speech from the Prime Minister. The message from Andy Burnham is ‘Hope Again’, and I know that this hope is felt throughout the Parliamentary Labour Party after conference renewed and refocussed our aims for the coming challenges ahead. The speech from the Prime Minister seems to have gone down well with others too, judging by the feedback I have received in my inbox this week from constituents who are hopeful too. The 1st of October marks the opening of the Legal Year and on Wednesday evening I was pleased to attend the Law Society and Bar Council dinner to mark the occasion. Early the next morning, I was in the Royal Courts of Justice to be sworn in as Solicitor General along with Attorney General, Ellie Reeves, and Lord Chancellor Alex Norris. As part of the ceremony, I swore my oath to respect the rule of law and serve His Majesty’s Government as a Law Officer. The oaths were followed by a very welcoming speech by the Lady Chief Justice who congratulated the three of us on our new roles. The ceremony in the Royal Courts of Justice was followed by a service held in Westminster Abbey for the official Opening of the Legal Year. It is a great privilege to be sworn in as Solicitor General. It is an important role in our constitution, which bridges law and government to ensure good governance. As Chair of the Justice Select Committee, I saw first-hand the pressures facing our justice system. I now look forward to working with the Attorney General to tackle these challenges directly, and to ensure our justice system commands the public’s confidence. Parliament remains in recess as party conference season continues. The House sists again on Monday 12th of October.
