Chiswick residents could be forgiven for confusion while crossing Chiswick Back Common to see a sign welcoming them to Turnham Green.

Contractors putting up the sign on behalf of Hounslow Council recently were in obvious need of local knowledge . As most local residents know, Turnham Green tube station is actually opposite Acton Green Common, and Turnham Green itself is on Chiswick High Road to the east and west of Christ Church.

The sign was erected on Chiswick Back Common - the green space at the back of Marks and Spencer/Chiswick Common Lane/Fishers Lane , but was at the wrong end of Chiswick.

The misplacement gave rise to a good deal of local bemusement and one councillor described it as "embarrassing".

Local historians will point out that the area may have been part of Turnham Green prior to the advent of the railway but will not have been described as such since the 19th Century.

After locals phoned the Council to alert them of their mistake, a sticker was placed across the sign , pending its removal although it has since fallen off..

Hounslow Council have not responded to our request for a comment on the sign.
