Church Street to remain open and proposed filter lane scrapped
January 20, 2025 Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that it no longer intends to proceed with proposed changes around Hogarth Roundabout. This includes an abandonment of the closure of access to Church Street and the addition of a filter lane to turn left onto the A316. It published the consultation report about the scheme this Monday (20 January) which showed that nearly 1,000 responses were received. About a quarter of respondents raised concerns about the tight turn by Chiswick Square and the George & Devonshire pub necessitated if access to Church Street was ended. TfL says it will be looking at the design of the exit and entrance to Church Street to see how it can be made safer. Instead of a filter lane, TfL says it will now change ‘signs and lines’ on the approaches to the roundabout to ensure clarity for road users. Reponses to TfL’s online survey on the proposals showed that 35% thought the plan would worsen road safety and 34% would improve it. TfL still intends to look at lowering the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph at the roundabout and approaches. In addition, it plans to close the western side of the Mawson Lane slip road to address the specific safety risk of westbound vehicles mounting the kerb and entering and exiting into the first lane of the A4. Proposed subway and wayfinding improvements including deep cleaning of the area will proceed. The original proposal attracted a huge amount of local opposition with Hounslow Council’s own transport team expressing reservations. “Following a lengthy campaign alongside local community groups, we’re delighted that Church Street will now remain open,” said Jack Emsley, Conservative Councillor for Chiswick Homefields. “From the very beginning, it’s been clear that the proposal to close Church Street would do huge damage to St Nicholas Church, the George and Devonshire and the wider old Chiswick area. We’re glad that TfL has listened to us and the local community and ditched the plans.”
