Fears of avian disease outbreak prompt warnings to dog walkers

A series of dead swans discovered along the Thames at Chiswick has prompted fresh concern about the spread of avian influenza and the potential risks to pets and people using the riverbank.

Three swans were found on Chiswick Mall and the foreshore yesterday, adding to several similar reports along the waterfront in recent days. While test results have not yet been confirmed, local wildlife groups believe the birds may have died from avian flu, which has been detected elsewhere on the Thames this winter.

Avian influenza is primarily a disease affecting birds, but it can occasionally infect mammals. Experts stress that the risk to the general public remains low, but they advise caution around dead or visibly sick wildlife. Dog walkers are being urged to keep pets away from carcasses and from areas where dead birds have been found.

Local volunteers say the deaths appear consistent with recent outbreaks upriver. One resident who reported the latest cases said they had been advised that the strain circulating in parts of the Thames is “untreatable” in wild birds, making early reporting essential.

Authorities and animal-welfare organisations are asking the public not to touch dead or distressed birds under any circumstances. Parents and carers are also being encouraged to ensure children understand the importance of keeping their distance.

The Animal and Plant Health Agency said: "Members of the public are advised to not touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds that they find, and should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water if they touch wild bird faeces or feathers or after feeding wild birds."

Anyone who finds a dead swan or other waterbird is asked to report it to DEFRA on 03459 33 55 77. The department will advise on collection depending on the location.

Officials say that while isolated cases are not unusual during the winter months, they will continue to track reports along the Chiswick stretch of the river. Dog owners using the towpath are being encouraged to stay alert and avoid allowing pets to scavenge or investigate dead birds.
