Policy Change for Turnham Green During Engineering Works

Transport for London (TfL) appears to have changed a policy of closing Turnham Green station during District line engineering works.
On the weekend before the Early May Bank Holiday, the western section of the District Line is completely closed including the branches to Ealing Broadway and Richmond.
On previous occasions when this has happened, Turnham Green station has been shut with no services at the station. When this happened in November 2023, representations were made to TfL by local residents asking for the station to remain open and to be served by Piccadilly line trains.
The previous month there had been a similar closure but traffic in the area was so severe that passengers said that the replacement bus service was unusable with journeys to Hammersmith to connect with the Piccadilly line taking an hour.
TfL provided a Piccadilly line service at times of District Line closure up until at least 2018 but later changed this policy saying that it was not practical to make short term timetable changes of this nature during engineering works. It did not provide an answer when we asked what had changed to mean that it was no longer possible to keep Turnham Green open.
However, in its update on forthcoming engineering works for Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May, TfL says that the Piccadilly line trains will now stop at Turnham Green from 7am on Saturday and all-day Sunday. The Piccadilly line is suspended between Hyde Park Corner and Acton Town on Saturday, up until 7am.
In addition, two replacement bus services will call at Turnham Green with Route DL1 travelling from Hammersmith to Acton Town and Route DL3 running between Hammersmith and Richmond early mornings and late evenings.
We have asked TfL for an explanation as to why the temporary Piccadilly line service has been reintroduced at Turnham Green.
The prospect of a permanent stop at the station remains distant, but rail industry insiders say that some hope can be taken from the breaking of ground for the Siemens Mobility site in Chippenham this month. TfL is a partner in the £100 million facility and it is believed the size of the investment indicates a commitment to the signal upgrade on the Piccadilly line which is a prerequisite of a full service at Turnham Green. However, for the time-being, no funding has been identified for this project.
