Their son Sam and daughter Hannah also returned from university to celebrate the event. Karen received her MBE from Prince Charles who was particularly interested in her work helping to save the walled garden at Chiswick House and Gardens.
Later the family celebrated at the Athenaeum. Karen described the day as” huge fun, and very amusing” and commented; "I would like to thank everyone who helped with the nomination. And I would particularly like to thank everyone who worked in or helped out with the Kitchen Garden over the years - including all the kids. I hope it remains a beautiful and productive garden for the use of the community for many years to come." A total of 1,223 people were recommended to The Queen for an award in 2013, of whom over 70% were nominated for outstanding work in their communities.
