Lizzy Bunker giving talk hosted by the Chiswick Pier Trust
March 5, 2025 Lizzy Bunker, the Programme Manager for Community BlueScapes, has been invited by the Chiswick Pier Trust to speak flood risk along the River Thames and initiatives being taken to protect riverside communities from flooding. She will tell how permeable pavements, ‘hydrorocks’ and ponds can help prevent flooding during periods of extreme weather. She is currently working to ensure flood and weather resilience beside Beverley Brook, a tributary of the River Thames in Richmond. The CommunityBlueScapes programme was set up in direct response to “a rapidly changing climate and the frequency of flooding incidents in the borough”. The programme has been awarded £6million by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs as part of their £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes and is a partnership between London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Barnes Common Limited, and WWT. The talk is being given on Tuesday, 25 March at 7pm at the The Pier House, Corney Reach Way W4 2UG. Doors open to The Pier House at 6.30pm. Refreshments will be on sale. Tickets cost £5 with no charge to members of Chiswick Pier Trust (CPT) and non-members are welcome. Chiswick Pier Trust is also holding its popular Mothering Sunday river cruise again this year. There will be an opportunity to take afternoon tea on the Thames on 30 March. Treat the family to tea and delicious cake served at the table whilst cruising upstream. There will be a commentary pointing out the interesting sights as you sail along the river to Teddington Lock. The boat will depart from Chiswick Pier at 3pm with embarkation from 2.45pm. You are advised to book your tickets early as this is a very popular event which sells out fast. Tickets cost £36.00 adults with children under 12 costing £30.00. Book online at chiswickpier.org.uk or call 020 8742 2713 The Oxford and Cambridge boat race is on Sunday 13 April, starting with the women's race at 13:20 and finishing with the men's at 14:21. Chiswick Pier is a prime vantage spot from which to watch the race with the added bonus of a choice of hot food, Fullers bar and refreshments all on sale. These events are organised by the Chiswick Pier Trust which works to engage people with the River Thames. It provides access to the Thames and supports major river events, as well as organising events of its own. For information on Chiswick Pier Trust membership check the Chiswick Pier Trust's web site.
