Nick Pollard to give illustrated lecture hosted by Chiswick Pier Trust
April 8, 2026 Chiswick Pier Trust (CPT) is to host a richly illustrated evening with Nick Pollard, Curator of Spelthorne Museum and a leading voice in Thames heritage. Hewill explore the extraordinary paintings and drawings created by Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697–1768)—better known as Canaletto—during his extended stay in Britain from 1746 to 1755. Focusing on scenes along the River Thames, the talk reveals how Canaletto captured the life, labour and landscape of 18th-century London with remarkable precision. Expect insights into the river’s working communities, its shifting shoreline, and the architectural details that Canaletto recorded with almost documentary clarity. This is an ideal event for anyone interested in art history, London’s riverside past, or the Thames as a living cultural landscape. The talk takes place on Tuesday 28 April starting at 7pm at The Pier House, Corney Reach Way, W4 2UG. Tickets are £5 or free for CPT members. Events like this are organised by the Chiswick Pier Trust which works to engage people with the River Thames. It provides access to the Thames and supports major river events, as well as organising events of its own. For information on Chiswick Pier Trust membership check the Chiswick Pier Trust's web site.
