Last gig of the year at the The Duck and Ball
November 28, 2025 Chiswick jazz lovers are in for a festive treat as the Phil Brown Swingtet returns to The Duck and Ball on Thursday 18 December for a special Christmas Jazz Party. The evening promises swinging sounds, guest musicians, festive cheer, and a free raffle — all set against the backdrop of one of west London’s most charmingly decorated venues. This six-piece ensemble, led by veteran trombonist Phil Brown, plays a wide range of jazz styles from traditional and mainstream to modern — with influences spanning from Louis Armstrong to Count Basie. Joining Phil are his son Lester Brown on trumpet and flugelhorn, Mark Aston on reeds, Mike Bennett on double bass, and brothers Andrew and David Clancy on piano and drums respectively. The December session will feature jazzy takes on Christmas classics, alongside swing standards and modern favourites. Regular guest vocalists such as Diane Slater, Isabel Saunders, Teresa Jennings, and Stephan O’Goodson are expected to join, with possible appearances from trumpeters Chris Hodgkins and Anthony Cox, and members of the extended Clancy musical family. The band’s November performance included standout renditions of Johnny Hodges’ The Jeep is Jumping, Charlie Parker’s Little Suede Shoes, and Duke Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing. Vocalist Diane Slater delivered a swinging take on Exactly Like You, and the evening closed with a rousing ensemble finish. Adding to the atmosphere, Dan Guest’s Lindy Circle Dancers have become a welcome fixture, bringing stylish swing dancing to the live sets — and they’re always invited back. The Duck and Ball is 12 Riverside Drive, Chiswick W4 2SP (opposite Dukes Meadows) and the event runs from 8pm to 10:30pm. Entry is free and there is also aa free raffle. The Duck and Ball, located in the Chiswick Cricket Club pavilion, offers a warm and welcoming space for live music, with a reputation for good food and a relaxed atmosphere. The Swingtet will continue to perform monthly on the third Thursday.
