A cultural event exploring the artistic legacy of William Hogarth is set to take place on Thursday 18 September at 7 PM at St Nicholas Church in Chiswick. Organised by the Friends of St Nicholas Church in association with the ongoing "Hogarth and the Senses" exhibition at Hogarth’s House, the evening will combine music, poetry, and historical reflection.
The event will begin with a short introduction to Hogarth’s life and his connection to Chiswick, where he lived and is buried. Attendees will have the opportunity to view Hogarth’s tomb and examine the original parish register recording his death.
The programme includes a selection of music and poetry associated with Hogarth’s time. The artist was known to admire the music of George Frideric Handel, whom he praised in his 1753 treatise The Analysis of Beauty. The concert will feature works by Handel and other composers of the period, including Pepusch, John Christopher Smith, Corelli, Bononcini, and Castrucci. A new composition by David Hackbridge Johnson will receive its world premiere during the event.
Poetry readings will include works by Alexander Pope and newly written pieces by Malene Sheppard Skaerved, presented under the title "Hogarth’s Enlightening." The music will be performed on a 1629 violin crafted by Girolamo Amati, offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear a historic instrument in a setting closely tied to Hogarth’s life.
Tickets cost £12 or £6 for students and can be purchased online in advance or at the door on the night.
The event is part of a wider programme celebrating Hogarth’s influence on British art and culture, and his connections to Chiswick and London. It also highlights the historical significance of St Nicholas Church, which is the final resting place not only of Hogarth but also of figures associated with the Burlington estate, including architect William Kent and builder Richard Wright.
