Award-winning play by Nick Hennegan presents a cruel twist of fate
March 29, 2025 An award-winning play that was first performed in a pub theatre in Birmingham 27 years ago is being revived at The Tabard. Take Note Theatre and Maverick Theatre Company are staging A Ghost of a Chance by local writer Nick Hennegan. This ‘domestic ghost story went to the Edinburgh Fringe winning the National Theatre’s Guinness Award and was praised as “an absorbing, entertaining play, full of originality” by The Stage. In this intriguing tale, Nick Hennegan, persuasively invites us to think about the frailty of life and the moral dilemmas inherent in being human. Bob is at breaking point. Once a proud man, he’s now in despair after losing his job—a secret he keeps from his wife and child. Every day, he pretends to go to work, hides overdue bills, and watches his world crumble. With his house on the brink of repossession, Bob has hit rock bottom. Then, one fateful night, an unexpected lifeline appears: the winning lottery numbers. But in this cruel twist of fate, salvation comes at a price—one so dark and unthinkable that Bob must decide just how far he’s willing to go to save his family. Revived for the first time since its initial run, it now plays a limited three week run from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 19 April. The play is suitable for anyone aged over 14. Tickets for the preview performance on 2 April cost £18 and then until 12 April the price is £23.50/£19.50 concessions and, following that £25.50/£21.50 concessions until the end of the run. There is a chance for young actors aged between 10 and 15 to get involved in the production. The Maverick Theatre Company’s wants performers to play children in two very short video sequences featuring those who have been 'helped' by the entity before, throughout history. The videos from the original production have either been lost or have faded. If anyone, or a group, who would have an hour or so to film these clips accompanied by parents or carers.
