The Tabard Theatre will welcome back one of the standout successes of the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe this August, as Maverick Theatre revives Winston and David, Robert Lloyd George’s intimate and revealing portrait of two of Britain’s most consequential Prime Ministers. Running from 6 to 29 August, the production offers a rare chance to see a history-driven drama that combines political rivalry, personal affection and the looming shadow of the First World War.
The play explores the complex relationship between Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George — two men whose ambitions, loyalties and temperaments shaped the course of the early twentieth century. Drawing on previously unseen family documents, Lloyd George’s script traces how their friendship and political manoeuvring intertwined with Britain’s fateful decision to enter the war in 1914. What emerges is not a dry history lesson but a human story: two towering figures wrestling with love, ego, trust and the burden of leadership at a moment when the world was about to change forever.
Maverick Theatre’s artistic director Nick Hennegan returns to the Tabard to direct the revival, bringing the same clarity and emotional charge that have marked his Fringe successes, from Henry V and A Christmas Carol to Hamlet – Horatio’s Tale with Sir Derek Jacobi. Maverick last appeared at the Tabard with A Ghost of A Chance in April 2025, and their return promises another tightly crafted, actor-driven evening.
The original Edinburgh run earned warm praise from critics. The Scotsman called it “a very warm and sentimental portrait” and “a very entertaining history lesson”, while Fringe Review named it a Highly Recommended Show, praising the strength and seamlessness of the writing and direction. Get Your Coats described it as “outstanding”, and The Arts Business celebrated the dynamic pairing of Churchill and Lloyd George as “a fantastic fringe show”.
With only twelve performances scheduled, Winston and David is set to be one of the Tabard’s most sought-after summer productions. Tickets are £23.50, with concessions at £19.50, and the running time is approximately sixty minutes with no interval.
For audiences interested in political drama, historical storytelling or simply a sharply drawn character study, this revival offers a compelling glimpse into the private worlds of two men who helped steer Britain through its most turbulent era.
