A planning application (P/2024/1154) has been submitted to Hounslow Council for a single storey orangery extension at the Bell and Crown pub.

The solid wood structure will replace the existing conservatory to bring the line of the building out to same level as the left-hand side as viewed from the river. The aim is to provide additional restaurant space all year round and replace elements of poor quality within the current building.

The timber and glazed orangery will have two roof lanterns on a flat roof, one of which will be above the existing structure of the former butchers at 73 Strand on the Green. It will incorporate gothic style glazing to reflect the style of the windows to the existing conservatory and the adjacent building.

Although the building is not listed, Fuller’s acknowledges that it is of significance in the context of the Strand on the Green Conservation Area and Grade II listed buildings in its immediate vicinity.

The Brentford and Chiswick History Society says that a pub was licensed as the Bell and Crown in the late 18th century and was acquired by Fuller, Smith and Turner in 1814. The existing pub was built in 1907 in an arts and crafts style that was popular at the time and the designers have attempted to make the new building consistent with the existing structure.

This is not the first time Fuller’s has sought to erect a permanent covered structure at the location. It went ahead with a glass box extension in March 2020 despite a lack of planning permission and was required to dismantle it six months later when retrospective permission was refused.

The Strand on the Green Residents’ Association accused the company of showing a 'flagrant disregard for planning law' despite the company’s earlier claim that the design was within the scope of the plans consented to in 2018. The existing conservatory was put up in the 1980s.

Further details of the proposal can be seen in the planning section of the Hounslow Council web site. Comments on the proposal can be made on this form using the reference P/2024/1154.
