Vinoteca had been at the location for nearly 12 years
September 27, 2025 Popular Devonshire Road wine bar Vinoteca has closed, apparently permanently. The premises at 18 Devonshire Road is now locked up, and the Chiswick branch has been removed from the company’s website, suggesting the closure is final. Vinoteca Chiswick originally opened in October 2013, taking over the site of the former Oriental Brasserie. It quickly became a local favourite, known for its seasonal menu and an extensive wine list inspired by continental enoteca style wine bars. With seating for around 50 and a wine shop tucked at the rear, it catered to both casual drinkers and serious wine enthusiasts. The Vinoteca group was founded in 2005 by Elena Ares, Brett Woonton and Charlie Young. Their vision was to create wine bars that combined high-quality, affordable wines with fresh, seasonal food in relaxed settings. Over the years, the group expanded to multiple London locations and built a loyal following. In August 2023, the company entered administration, citing financial pressures including inflation, rising energy costs, and the impact of train strikes. In the year ending March 2022, Vinoteca had posted losses of over £2 million and warned in its accounts that it was reliant on creditor support to continue trading. Following the administration, the chain was acquired by City-based private equity firm Breal Capital. Administrator Ryan Grant said at the time, “After exploring a number of options, we’re pleased to have concluded this transaction which will see the continued operation of the company’s venues and which importantly, safeguards over 150 jobs.” The deal included five locations: London Bridge, Bloomberg Arcade, Farringdon, Kings Cross, and Chiswick of which only two now remain open Breal Capital has been active in the drinks industry, acquiring Yorkshire’s Black Sheep Brewery in May 2023 and reportedly considering further acquisitions in London. Previously, its investments had focused on the steel sector. Breal Capital is now listed as being in liquidation at Companies House but the entity listed as acquiring Vinoteca is Breal Capital (Black Sheep) B , formerly Keystone Brewing Group Limited. According to Companies House, it was incorporated on 1 March 2024, with its first accounts due by 1 December 2025.
