Wins gold in the 1500 metres indoor event in Poland
March 24, 2026 Georgia Hunter Bell produced the defining performance of her career so far to win gold in the women’s 1500m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland. Having finished just outside the medals in 2024 and then reached the podium in 2025, the former Chiswick schoolgirl completed her rise by taking top spot in emphatic fashion, clocking a world-leading 3:58.53 this Sunday (22 March). The race itself unfolded dramatically. Birke Haylom set a blistering early pace, surging through 400m and 800m to build a commanding lead of more than three seconds over the field. Behind her, Georgia ran with composure, sitting in the chasing pack alongside Jessica Hull and Agathe Guillemot. As the race wore on, the gap began to shrink. With 400 metres remaining, Haylom’s advantage had been cut significantly, and Georgia made her decisive move just before the bell. Sweeping past the fading leader with less than a lap to go, she took control and never relinquished it, holding off a late surge from Hull to secure victory. Hull claimed silver in an Oceanian indoor record, while Nikki Hiltz took bronze. Afterwards, Georgia admitted the mental challenge had been as significant as the physical one. “This victory is so sweet,” she said. “It’s such a relief to win a gold medal. I knew I had to prepare mentally before coming here as a favourite… I’m really proud of myself to stay calm.” While Georgia already boasts an Olympic bronze medal over 1500m and a world indoor silver at 800m, this triumph marks her first senior World Athletics gold medal, confirming her status as one of Britain’s leading middle-distance runners. The 31-year-old’s journey to the top has been anything but conventional. After attending St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School in Chiswick her early athletic development took place alongside her academic studies but injured led to a break from the sport. Her later decision to return to elite level competition was made after a period working in cyber security. Georgia’s victory came amid a remarkable run of success for Great Britain and Northern Ireland athletics team, with British athletes securing three gold medals in quick succession during the championships.
