Polytechnic FC Marks 150 Years This Season
One of nation's oldest amateur football teams to hold commemorative match

Polytechnic Football Club, one of the oldest amateur football clubs in the United Kingdom, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this season.
Founded in 1875 by educational reformer Quintin Hogg, the club has been based at the Quintin Hogg Memorial Sports Ground in Chiswick since 1906.
In 2013, the club, along with another Chiswick-based team Civil Service FC, was invited to play the first ever match staged at Buckingham Palace as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of The Football Association (FA). This was to honour the contribution made by both clubs to grass roots football. Prince William, President of the FA, hosted the event and presented medals to 150 grassroots volunteers in recognition of their contributions to the sport.
The club is notable not only for its longevity but also for its status as one of the few amateur football clubs that are Full Members of the Football Association. Over the decades, Polytechnic FC has built a reputation for offering high-quality facilities, including well-maintained pitches, modern changing rooms, and a welcoming clubhouse. These amenities are supported by the Quintin Hogg Trust, which owns the site, and Latymer Upper School, which holds the lease.
Polytechnic FC currently fields seven open-age men’s teams competing in the Southern Amateur League. It also runs a Veterans section, with players ranging in age from 40 to 85, and a growing women’s squad that is preparing to enter league competition in the 2025–2026 season. The club welcomes players of all abilities, from experienced athletes to those seeking fitness, recreation, and community.
Men’s games are held on Saturdays and women’s fixtures on Sundays, with refreshments provided by School Kitchen.
Beyond the pitch, Polytechnic FC plays an active role in local life. It regularly hosts post-match gatherings, charity events, and community activities, contributing to a strong sense of camaraderie among members and supporters.
Club Chairman Barry Madigan said the anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on Polytechnic FC’s unique place in London football history. He emphasised the club’s commitment to maintaining its traditions while continuing to grow as an inclusive and ambitious organisation.
To mark the occasion, the club will host a commemorative match on Saturday, 9 May 2026, against a representative side from the Southern Amateur League. Local residents are invited to attend this fixture, as well as regular home matches throughout the season.
