Strong month confounds doomsayers

Expectations of a sharp fall in Chiswick property prices have not been met according to the latest figures from the Land Registry.
After falls at the end of last year prices appear to have rebounded in the early part of 2008 with the average price achieved in January £716,248. This is above the previous record level for a single month seen in October 2007 of £670,764.
The month was also notable for the number of properties at the top end of the market changing hands. 15% of sales during the month were at prices over £1 million and included the sale of a property in Barrowgate Road for £3,410,327.
These numbers relate to a period before the recent credit crunch and more recent surveys have suggested that prices have started to fall in subsequent months.
