Connie Solman, owner and founder of independent shop, The Maternity Company, is proud to announce her shop’s 10-year anniversary, and is celebrating by offering all customers 20% off all full-priced items in the shop for a limited time.

Connie didn’t start out to become a mum-trepreneur. “When I came here from Denmark, it was only to improve my English, but I loved the country and like many, decided to stay.”

Connie and her English husband, Andrew, settled in the area and when Connie became pregnant, she was soon frustrated by the lack of stylish, Continental clothing available to pregnant women. She thought there was a gap in the market, and decided to create The Maternity Company.

Connie remembers walking around her new shop with her 2-week old baby in a sling and deciding she loved the business. “It’s a happy business,” she says, “everybody who walks through the door is excited about having a baby so you have some great chats with people coming in. They look for advice and you share stories – it’s really nice.”

“We outfit the store with the very nicest European clothing I can find,” she continues, “including beautiful things from Sweden, Italy, Denmark and Holland. I do all my own buying, so I know where the clothes come from and how they are made. That’s important to me.”

The industry around her has changed considerably, but Connie still says she wouldn’t have her business anywhere else. “Chiswick really is a lovely little corner of London,” she says. “It’s quite unique.”
