Sam Harrison says decision allows him to focus on success of brasseries

Sam Harrison has announced that Sam's Kitchen on Turnham Green Terrace will close its doors on Sunday 22 March, two years to the day after its opening, bringing to an end a chapter in his long relationship with Chiswick.

The move was first revealed to attendees at a fundraising event for the Upper Room charity at St. Michael and All Angels Church at which Sam was the guest speaker this Thursday evening (12 March).

He later explained that the decision was made to allow him and his team to concentrate on his two larger brasserie operations — Sam's Riverside in Hammersmith and Sam's Waterside in Brentford — which he says are "continuing to attract a large and loyal following that is growing beyond our expectations."

His connection to W4 stretches back to 2005, when he opened his first restaurant in Barley Mow Passage. That original venture, which later became Sam's Brasserie, ran for a decade and earned him a devoted local following. By his own account, when he first opened in 2005, there were just seven competitors in the local area — a number that has since risen to well over 70.

When Sam's Brasserie eventually closed and Harrison turned his attention to Hammersmith, many Chiswick regulars felt his absence keenly. He returned to the area in October 2022 with Sam's Larder — a combination deli and grocer with a small all-day café — at 59-61 Turnham Green Terrace, modelled on the Larder that had proved popular alongside Sam's Riverside during the pandemic.

Before its April 2024 opening, the Turnham Green Terrace site was transformed from Sam's Larder into a Sam's Kitchen, following the format that had already proven successful in Hammersmith. The 40-seat café retained the warmth of the original, with leather banquettes, marble countertops, antique mirrors and tiling — and in a nod to Sam's Brasserie, a number of works by artist Sir Peter Blake, gifted to Harrison and previously displayed at the old Chiswick restaurant, adorned the walls.

Head Chef Abbie Hendren joined the venture, and in a nod to the restaurant's local roots, the kitchen developed a partnership with Chiswick House & Gardens to use their produce wherever possible — picked in the morning and on the plate by lunchtime. The venue later expanded its offering beyond daytime brunch, opening three evenings a week with a seasonal tasting menu that drew strong reviews.

Sam was philosophical about the decision, "I am so fond of the TGT site and so it was important to me that it be taken on by the right owners." He has hinted that he will shortly be able to reveal details of the new operators and their plans for the space, describing it as "a real treat for Chiswick."

He signed off by thanking the local community for two decades of support: "Chiswick has always held a very special place in my heart and it always will do. We will never be very far away — in either Hammersmith or Brentford."
