Shoplifting along Chiswick High Road, including the arrest of a number of Romanians identified as a gang carrying out 'bulk' shop lifting in other areas has been a priority for local police along with thefts from vehicles and bike theft.

A comprehensive report on crimes in all three wards in Chiswick has shown burglaries decreased in Riverside and Homefields wards but crimes such as theft of and from motor vehicles, pedal cycles, and outside sheds is still a problem.

You can read the report for your ward below;

Theft of/ from motor vehicles

Motor vehicle crime still remains a high priority. A number of plain clothes patrols were carried out into the early mornings to combat thefts.The current trend is to use small stones thrown at the window to cause the window to shatter; the recovery of these stones has led to a number of suspects identified. There has also been an increase in theft of number plates and residents are being encouraged to use tamper proof screws or locking bolts. The main victims still tend to be non-residents parking in the area despite signs having been put up in hot spot areas.

Theft from Motor Vehicle

Unfortunately there has been an increase in thefts from Motor Vehicles over the winter, but the figures for the year have shown a drop in overall offences. There have been no identifiable streets as hot spots as a number of streets across the ward have been affected. The vehicles that are targeted appear to have had bags or computer equipment on display.

Number of theft from motor vehicles recorded:

Feb 13 to Jan 14 - 151

Feb 14 to Jan 15 - 129

Burglary

There has been a slight increase in burglaries on the ward in the run up to the New Year. Most of the burglaries have been residential and many of these were due to insecure premises. The number of shed burglaries has also reduced. The figures for the year have shown an increase and this was due to the high number of shed and out house offences we saw in May and April. There were two arrests for burglary in Dukes avenue recently.

Total burglaries on the ward:

Feb 13 to Jan 14 - 124

Feb 14 to Jan 15 - 149

Reduction in business crime

In general business crime has fallen slightly since this has been identified as an issue, although there has been an increase in the reports of shoplifting as we expected with encouraging reporting from the stores in the High Road (February 14 to January 15, 167 reported offences compared to 138 in the same period last year). The team have recently conducted a plain clothed operation at Sainsbury, Essex Place, Chiswick High Road where 2 shoplifters were detained and an organized group of Romanians were stopped who had been previously been involved in bulk shoplifting in Ealing and Hillingdon. More of these operations are planned over the coming weeks. PS Turtle has also helped to launch a new PubWatch scheme which now includes seven of the major pubs in Chiswick High Road. Closer co-operation with licensed premises will see a reduction in the distressing thefts of female handbags and mobile phones we have seen over the last few months. We have also advised licensees to install Chelsea hooks so that bags can be secured properly at tables. We are pleased to note that more stores are reporting crime at the time using the Store Link radios we have supplied. Stores have also been given crime prevention advice around the issue of counterfeit £50 and £20 notes which have been circulating in the High Road. Some stores have now purchased ultra violet scanners and pens to check bank notes.

HOMEFIELDS WARD

Burglary

Burglary numbers saw a small rise on the approach to Christmas, but this then fell sharply afterwards with only 6 in January compared to 11 in November. The teams are using the predictive policing method to enhancing uniformed presence in these areas is assisting with these figures.

Figures for all burglaries are;
Feb 13 to Jan 14 - 126
Feb 14 to Jan 15 - 96

Theft from motor vehicle
Thefts from motor vehicles have remained fairly constant in number looking at the month on month figures. Homefields sees the highest number of such crimes across Chiswick and there has been an increase on the same period last year. Again the team are using the predictive policing method to target patrol areas.
This is still one of the main ward priorities, with a change in local hot spots. The majority of the crime is believed to be committed by cross boarder criminals using pedal cycles or mopeds knowing full well that this makes their route of escape much easier.

From the previous hot spots in Welstead Way, the team managed through the tasking process to obtain the placement of CCTV in the car park, obtained Safer Transport MSC officers to patrol that area, and several people have been stopped and prevented many more crime in this small area. The Police Volunteer Cadet Corp have been out on the ward distributing crime prevention leaflets and helping in getting the prevention message across. This is good for residents, but we find that that a large bulk of the victims do not live in the area, so it is hard to get the message about security and removing valuables from cars to them.

There has also been some excellent evidence obtained from Hounslow Homes CCTV which has been utilised for dissemination via our briefings regarding suspects on scooters.
Theft from motor vehicle figures:
Feb 13 to Jan 14 - 220
Feb 14 to Jan 15 - 249

Anti-social behaviour
The ASB on the ward is still low in number, most of the ASB issues are one off incidents or related to a specific address. Where ASB is related to a specific address, partnership work with stakeholders has the most efficient way to deal with the issues.

There have been issues raised to the team around reckless cycling and people using cycles in pedestrian areas. The team have been focusing on this is key areas, mainly giving out advice to cyclists, but tickets have been issued as well. This is an ongoing piece of work.
