Halifax has included its Chiswick branch on the latest list of planned closures.

The 366-368 Chiswick High Road branch is due to close on 1 November continuing the flight of financial institutions from the centre of town.

Halifax says the decision was down to falling usage at the branch based on analysis up to March of this year looking back at the previous four years. It is recommending that customers switch to using the branch on King Street in Hammersmith.

The bank claims that only 79 used the branch regularly in the 12 months to this March and both branch visits and use of the cash machine have fallen sharply. Branch visits have more than halved since 2018 while ATM withdrawals are down by 43% It is not clear how Halifax is defining 'regularly' to determine the number of customers.

It has said that 64% of customers at the Chiswick branch also use other Halifax branches and 78% use other branches, online banking or telephone banking.

13% of the branch’s customers are aged 75 or over.

The company says that it has shared the closure plans for this branch with LINK, who on behalf of the Cash Action Group have independently assessed the access to cash needs of the local community. There are three free cash machines within a short walk of the branch.

A Banking Hub was recently opened on Acton High Street which allows customers of six major high street banks to do in person transactions but Halifax is not currently participating.
