A decision is still awaited on whether a controversial licence application for a monthly street food market will be approved.

The borough Licencing Panel met on Wednesday (17 January) to discuss whether the Food Street market, which had operated on a limited trial basis on the fourth Sunday of the month up until December, would be permitted to continue and expand in size.

The event, which takes place in the central Chiswick car park at Old Market Place, was backed by a large number of emails from people who had attended previous markets. However, there had been a smaller number of objections to the bid from some local businesses, a residents’ organisation and local councillor Joanna Biddolph. The grounds for opposing the market included the claim that it provided unfair competition for bricks and mortar businesses and the loss of parking on market days.

The panel of councillors discussed the application until after 10pm having begun the meeting at 7.30pm and then hearing from the applicant and other people making representations.

The panel concluded by saying that had expected to decide that evening but would announce its ruling within five working days.

It is not clear at this stage whether a Street Food market would be held this month even if it gained approval.

Organiser Richard Johnson declined to comment other than to say he was awaiting the decision.
