The third Chiswick Repair Café event was held last Saturday (21 January) and the initiative continues to go from strength to strength with over seventy items being fixed or examined at Christ Church on Turnham Green.

As well as restoring a wide range of items including irons, hoovers, toasters, travel bags, necklaces and coffee machines, two teddies, with a combined age of over 100 were brought back to life.

The owner of the younger bear said, ‘The lovely ladies mended "Little Bear" who is 66 years old. He's so grateful because now he can sit up and see what's going on again. Many thanks for a life-affirming experience!’

And the other bear who was born in 1933, belonged to Marian’s husband and she was having it mended to give to her grandson.

The Chiswick Repair Cafe is a voluntary initiative to reduce waste, share repair skills and enhance the local community. People bring broken or worn items to the Repair Café and the volunteers help them to mend it, or advise what else can be done. If you can carry it to the venue, they will have a go at fixing it.

The next Chiswick Repair Cafe takes place on Saturday 18 March at the same venue from 10:30am – 1pm.

Visitors pay for the parts and are asked to make a donation to the Repair Café running costs.

The offering will generally include:
• Small electrical /electronic repairs
• Carpentry repairs (e.g. gluing chairs)
• Toy repairs
• Computers & laptops (not mobile phones)
• Knife & tool sharpening
• Sewing repairs: mending /darning
• Small bike repairs

The venture was started by Charlotte, Jill, Kate and Marie-Claire, a group of local residents who are involved with various green initiatives around Chiswick and are part of the Hounslow Environmental Champions programme.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We’ve always done that and won’t be changing, in fact we’d like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.

If neither of these amounts is suitable for you then contact info@neighbournet.com and we can set up an alternative. All payments are made through a secure web site.

One-off donations are also appreciated. Choose The Amount You Wish To Contribute.
